Decaying Tree

When is it time to remove a tree?

Trees are a beloved part of many properties. They provide shade and protection and add to the natural beauty of a home. But at some point for one reason or another, a tree may need to come down. So how can you tell when it is time to remove a tree?

Trunk Health

Trunk damage is one of the major concerns to look for in the area of tree health. If a tree’s trunk is significantly damaged, the tree can be a serious hazard and probably needs to be removed. Trunk damage can happen in a variety of ways and can look different depending on how the trunk was damaged. Any trunk damage should be looked at by a professional who can properly inspect and assess the tree’s health.

Not only do you need to watch out for damaged trunks, but you also need to look for hollow trunks. Just like a damaged tree trunk, hollow tree trunks cannot provide adequate support for your trees and may necessitate removal by a professional.

Branches

Tree branches, in particular dead or rotting ones, can be a serious hazard and cause injury to people and/or damage to property including automobiles, homes and even other trees and landscaping on your property. Dead branches, left unattended, can alter the way a tree grows. If a tree begins losing limbs on one side, it can cause the tree to become lopsided. Taking down a tree is the best option if you have a tree that is losing large branches, is prone to rot or is growing irregularly and poses a safety hazard.

Fungus

Fungus is yet another factor that can lead to the deterioration of your tree’s health. Fungus infestation can lead to rot which may cause the tree to lose its stability and eventually decay and die. When you see that a tree is covered in fungus, it is a good idea to have it evaluated by a professional to determine the best course of action.

Root health

A tree’s roots are fundamentally important to the life and health of a tree. The roots hold your trees in the ground, keep them standing tall and allow the tree to obtain vital minerals from the soil. Root damage can negatively affect a tree’s health and also cause it to lean, which is a safety hazard, and should be evaluated by a professional arborist.

When it comes to making a decision about tree removal, there are a lot of different factors to consider. The best thing you can do is regularly evaluate the health of your trees and enlist the service of a professional arborist to help.
